The Basics Of A Good Concrete Job
The most important part to any successful concrete job is the foundation on which it’s poured. Fairless Custom Concrete NEVER pours concrete on native soil. Because dirt soils around the valley have different makeups, some of which can break down concrete and cause deterioration, we install a manufactured crushed rock. It is placed and compacted, creating a solid foundation free of minerals that cause concrete deterioration.
Then we install the proper concrete mix. Not all concrete is created equal. Fairless Custom Concrete uses a 4500psi mix with .50 water ratio on all projects from street curbing to residential walkways. A high performance concrete mix may cost a bit more per square foot initially than a basic mix, but in the long run it could save you the expense and headache of repairing cracks and other problems caused by cheap concrete.
The final step to a great job is joint placement. Joint placement helps prevent random cracking. Joints should be placed at a maximum spacing of 10 feet on a 4” thick slab. The joint placed in the concrete helps direct the cracking to appear in the joint. Remember, concrete does two things: it gets hard and it cracks. With control joints we are trying to control the placement of the cracking.
